Mainly as a result of high prices in the electricity market, TenneT's transmission tariffs will rise sharply in 2023. This is shown in TenneT's tariff proposal for 2023 published today by the Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM). TenneT's Annual Market Update 2021 describes, among other things, that electricity prices in Europe increased significantly from the second half of 2021. In the first quarter of 2022, these prices are about four times higher than in the first quarter of 2021. These price increases also affect the level of TenneT's transmission tariffs.

Underlying operating result (EBIT) increased to EUR 431 million in the first half of 2021 (first half of 2020: EUR 414 million). Underlining its robust financial position TenneT issued its largest ever (EUR 1.8 billion) and first green triple tranche Eurobond transaction.

North of the Maasvlakte, TenneT is developing the Hollandse Kust (zuid) offshore grid for the connection of new wind farms. Four offshore cables will be buried in the North Sea bed. For the first ten kilometres of the offshore cable route, these cables will be sunk 5.5 metres into the seabed to cross the busy Rotterdam "Maasmond". The first two cables were installed in September 2020 and now the remaining cables will follow. Tuesday the underwater robot 'Deep Dig-It' has successfully crossed the Rotterdam Maasmond with the third cable and is now on its way to the recently installed Beta jacket in the Hollandse Kust (zuid) wind area.

The high-voltage grid in the provinces of Gelderland and Flevopolder is reaching the limit of what can be returned to the grid. The high-voltage substations and connections in this area are reaching the maximum limit of what can be transported. Over the next few years TenneT will make various investments to increase the capacity of the grid. At the same time, the transmission system operator will investigate the possibilities of using other solutions to create more space on the grid in an accelerated manner. This is evident from the formal notification that was made today to the ACM, the regulator of the energy market.

The offshore transformer station of the Hollandse Kust (zuid) Alpha platform is successfully installed on the jacket in the North Sea, about 20 kilometers off the coast of The Hague, on Sunday December 26th 2021. The transformer station, also called topside, is one of the two topsides of the Hollandse Kust (zuid) offshore grid, which will connect the offshore wind farm area with the same name to the Dutch onshore high-voltage grid.

A further reduction in the capacity of gas and coal-fired power plants will result in a greater interdependence among countries in Northwestern Europe to meet their security of supply requirements in the medium to long term (2025-2030). This will also create greater risks for the security of supply for the Netherlands. These are the findings of the report ‘Monitoring Security of Supply 2021’, an annual analysis by TenneT that is commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs & Climate Policy.

On Monday 31 January, a cargo ship was cast adrift by storm Corrie in the area where TenneT is building two transformer platforms (Hollandse Kust Zuid Alpha and Beta) for the connection of the wind farm Hollandse Kust Zuid that is being built by Vattenfall. TenneT is currently working on the Hollandse Kust Zuid Alpha platform. Fortunately, the situation was safe for the 100 or so employees present and there was no need to evacuate.

The European Organization of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) gave the green light for supporting the electricity systems in Ukraine and Moldova. Following extensive safety, security and stability analyses, ENTSO-E, of which TenneT is also a member, has decided to provide emergency support to the Ukrainian and Moldovan power systems, connecting it to the so-called 'synchronous' continental European electricity grids.
